Escape

Escape
At Lake Pleasant, a small spring fed lake in Northwestern Pennsylvania.

I escaped from my life this weekend. I ran away totally. My husband John and I left Chicago Wednesday night at dusk, and got to our sleepy little hometown in NW PA around 3 am. There was no traffic. No one about. Just crickets and the sweet smell of grass and new life growing everywhere. So different from Chicago where we feel trapped daily.
There are certain benefits to living in a large city. Culture, art, music, good medical care. Good jobs. We both chose this city to further our careers. But it gets to be a drag now and then, all the concrete and bus fumes, and people driving on the overcrowded streets and elbowing you on the sidewalk. Sometimes you just don’t want to hear anything but a breeze singing through the trees, and the peepers at night, you know? Not the screeching of some jerk’s tires as he blows through a stop sign and the ever present sirens and roar of distant traffic. I find myself becoming nostalgic for clean air and quiet. When I was younger, in my 20’s and early 30’s I thought city life was exciting, and now that I’m getting old, I just want to breathe better.
My husband and I could not make a decent living at what we do in a smaller, more rural place. He is in computers and I am a musician. I am wondering if that goes for other people in other professions? With the US economy as it is, how are people getting by in the smaller towns? I know in my hometown we’d make about 1/4 of what we do here, and the cost of living isn’t much less. It really seems crazy. How long can this go on?
Anyhow, I was glad for my 5 day escape this weekend.
